The Boat Club sent a large team to the British Indoors which is the final event of the term for us. A team of over 50 students from across all the ages, including 16 students from Year 9 who have attended the ergo club at lunchtimes this term, were competing at the Olympic Velodrome in London.
The day’s racing started with the individual categories, the seniors raced over 2km, some strong performances including Natalie Graham who finished 9th from the girls, and Alex Ventesei finished 5th, both recording good times for their races. Rising to the event, PB’s for Hannah Cowie and Glen Mulkerrins whilst Izzy Glanvill finished within a second of hers. In the Year 10’s Mathew Fox finished a credible 13th in a very large field, whilst Jess Read, not to be outdone finished in 8th.
The last event of the day saw the Junior Relay, where all members of the teams competed over 8 minutes in a team of 4. We had 6 boys’ teams and 5 girls’ teams racing. Having watched two GB rowing teams go head to head, containing multiple Olympic champions, it gave all the students a real buzz going into the relay.
The senior girls’ team of: Voirrey Taylor, Natalie Graham, Hannah Cowie and Emma Dobson got off to a great start taking an early lead. Through the middle a strong team from St Pauls Girls School put a lot of pressure on, and managed to get ahead. The girls raced well though, and despite being unable to close the gap put a large margin between themselves and third place. They managed to finish with a silver medal in a great finish.
At the same time the boys team of Alex Ventesei, Glen Mulkerrins, Sam Kavanagh and Jack Colliver similarly got off to an early lead, but this time they were the ones being chased by two strong teams from Pangbourne College boat club and the Kings Worcester boat club. All three teams were never separated by more than 15 metres, and despite some nervy moments for the coaches in the last minute, the boys managed to stay sharp on their changeovers and took the victory by 6 metres. A fantastic end to a great day.
Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year, enjoy your break and we look forward to the new term in January.
